A milestone worth celebrating

Some announcements have a particular personal significance. Having been involved in the development of Ypsomed’s SmartPilot, I am delighted to see the collaboration between Ypsomed and smartpatient, announced on 14 October 2026, to connect SmartPilot with the MyTherapy digital patient engagement platform. [1, 2]

It is a proud moment to see a product I have contributed to become part of a broader vision for patient support. It is also an opportunity to recognise the colleagues and partners whose expertise and commitment bring that vision closer to everyday use.

What excites me most is the connection between the technology and its purpose: helping people feel better supported throughout their treatment journey.

Support that extends beyond the injection

SmartPilot is a reusable add-on that brings digital connectivity to the YpsoMate autoinjector, capturing injection-related information. The collaboration with smartpatient connects this capability with MyTherapy’s digital patient support platform. [1, 2]

The intended experience brings together injection guidance, medication reminders, therapy education and ongoing support. For people managing treatment at home, this offers the prospect of a more joined-up experience around their self-injection routine.

For me, that is a compelling purpose for connected technology: making information useful in the context of someone’s everyday life.

Making support more relevant to the individual

One of the most interesting opportunities is to use injection-related information to make support more relevant. The announcements describe personalised support, including additional training or tailored educational content when needed. [1, 2]

This creates a valuable connection between what happens during an injection and the guidance available afterwards. A patient’s interaction with their device can help inform the support offered as treatment continues.

I see this as an important direction for digital health: using technology to make support more timely, understandable and relevant to the person receiving it.

A practical route for pharmaceutical partners

The partnership also offers pharmaceutical companies a way to connect self-injection information with an established patient support platform, without having to build a separate digital ecosystem for every product. [1, 2]

Bringing complementary capabilities together provides a foundation that can be adapted to different pharmaceutical products and patient needs.

From my perspective, this is a particularly useful model for connected healthcare. It brings device expertise and patient engagement expertise into the same conversation, with a shared focus on the treatment experience.

Engineering with a clear human purpose

As someone involved in product development, I find it rewarding to see the connection between engineering work and the experience it is intended to support.

Mechanical design, electronics, embedded software, digital services, usability and cybersecurity each contribute to a dependable and straightforward experience. Bringing these disciplines together gives connected technology its practical value.

The best part of that work is the shared purpose. Every design decision, integration activity and verification step contributes towards a product that people can use with confidence.

This announcement is a welcome opportunity to celebrate that collective effort and the people behind it.

The value of working together

Ypsomed and smartpatient bring complementary perspectives to the treatment journey: expertise in self-injection technology and expertise in ongoing digital patient engagement.

For me, the strength of this collaboration lies in connecting those perspectives around the patient. It creates an opportunity to make the injection experience part of a broader, supportive relationship with treatment.

I am proud to have contributed to SmartPilot’s development, and pleased to see this next milestone in its journey. Congratulations to the colleagues and partners taking this work forward.

Connected technology is at its most meaningful when it helps make everyday life easier. That is the opportunity this collaboration represents.
